All About Sheep Wool

Sheep wool has long been a useful and popular natural product.

Historically wild sheep produced a coat that was either all hair or a wool and hair combination, both of which would shed out on their own. The type of coat produced was dependent on the climatic region the breed was living in.

Breeds of hair sheep today still maintain hair coats that will shed out on their own. While the hair can be used in some products it is often left to shed naturally and is seldom collected.

With domestication and breeding for the purpose of wool as an end use product we created animals with wool coats that do not shed. The fleece continues to grow throughout the life of the sheep, therefore, wool sheep need to be shorn to maintain good health.
