Herding Dog Breeds
Pick of the Litter

Which of the herding dog breeds fulfills the working dog role on your ranch?

We know there are various breeds of dogs handling the duties of ranch work across the country. We know there are many styles of working and many ways to get ranch work done.

As there are numerous herding dog breeds we have not had the privilege to work with first hand, it would be beyond our scope to tell you what every breed is like for ranch work.

To help in that regard though we have created a page where readers can post their stories depicting the work done and the ways their dogs help them out.

To read these stories and hear from those who are using these dogs visit the page on working dogs.

While you're there feel free to submit your own working dog story. Everyone has an opinion on the qualities that make a stellar working dog! We as well as our readers would love to hear yours.

List of Herding Dog Breeds

The beauty of the various herding breeds is dogs who work with various styles. From gathering far and wide to close pen work and from rustling on the range to quiet tending of the flock and every chore in between, there are dogs suited to the task. With a little research you can find a breed and a dog that suits your personality and the nature of the work you have in mind.

Herding dogs can be purchased as pups and trained by the rancher, purchased as young started dogs, or purchased as fully trained adults. You will pay a handsome price for the last dog but you should, as they are worth their weight in gold and then some.

We limited our list to the breeds we know of in North American, however, a wealth of information on the breeds in this list and many other rare breeds can be found at Herding on the Web. Alternatively, if you know of, or own, a good web site that depicts the working nature of any one of these breeds, please share it with us. Use our contact form to reach us.
